Ruaraidh Erskine of Mar

Unattributed portrait published in ‘The Sphere’ (7 March 1936, p. 422)

Ruaraidh Erskine of Mar | Ruaraidh Arascain is Mhàirr (15 January 1869, Brighton – 5 January 1960, Bridge, Kent), born Stuart Richard Joseph Erskine, was an author, editor, and activist. He learnt Gaelic and became a prolific writer of fiction, essays, drama, and poetry; he also translated the work of many other authors from Gaelic to English and vice versa.

His publications, apart from the magazines explored by this project, include editions of The Earl of Mar’s Legacies to Scotland (1896) and of the political writings of Henry St. John, Viscount Bolingbroke (1897), The Kilt and How To Wear It (1902), The Old Tribute & Other Pieces Translated from the Gaelic (1929), King Edward VII and Some Other Figures (1936), The Stout Adventure of Mary Stewart (1937), and The Great Baltic Bubble (1940).

On top of the contributions to the magazines listed below, which were signed by one of the versions of Erskine’s name or initials, he is most likely, on the basis of style and topics, the author of a substantial amount of pseudonymous and unattributed content, including the regular series of short articles in Guth na Bliadhna (‘Analaidhean nan Ràithean’) and The Scottish Review (‘Chronicles of the Quarters’).

Publications in the Periodicals

This section lists the contributions signed by one of the versions of Erskine’s name or initials. In addition, it can be assumed he is the author of much of the unattributed content in the magazines.
