Christopher Murray Grieve (11 August 1892, Langholm – 9 September 1978, Edinburgh), known by his pen-name ‘Hugh MacDiarmid,’ was a Scottish poet, essayist, and publisher. Erskine and Grieve were both involved in Scottish nationalist politics and published each other’s works in their magazines. The Scottish Chapbook, founded and edited by Grieve, published two of Erskine’s experimental Gaelic plays.
Grieve became one of the main contributors to Erskine’s The Pictish Review, supplying essays and poetry which were published under the names ‘C. M. Grieve,’ ‘Hugh MacDiarmid,’ and ‘Gillechrìosd Moraidh Mac-a’Ghreidhir.’
