Guth na Bliadhna

The quarterly Guth na Bliadhna (‘The Year’s Voice’) was the most viable of Erskine’s Gaelic periodicals. It appeared regularly during a period of 21 years, from 1904 until 1925. Until 1919, it was bilingual, in English and Gaelic, and afterwards Gaelic-only. Its longevity, diversity of topics and contributors, and, in the last phase, commitment to all-Gaelic content, bring it close to Gairm (1952-2022), the Gaelic quarterly founded by Derick Thomson and Finlay J MacDonald. In Contemporary Scottish Studies (1926), Hugh MacDiarmid described Guth na Bliadhna as ‘a beautifully produced Gaelic quarterly and practically the sole repository of contemporary Gaelic arts and letters of the slightest consequence.’ Donald John MacLeod, in Twentieth-Century Gaelic Literature (1969), noted that ‘for twenty years the editor of Guth na Bliadhna offered the Gaelic reading public a political and literary review of an uncompromisingly avant-garde and cosmopolitan nature, edited from a Gaelic-nationalist or otherwise radical point of view and written, eventually, entirely in Gaelic.’
